There is no drop-in fix for a drifting DualShock 4 stick
Drift is a worn track inside the stick module, so the module is what gets replaced — and on a DualShock 4 those modules are soldered to the board rather than plugged in. Software calibration cannot restore a surface that has worn away, whatever a tutorial claims.
- Drift is wear, so a replacement stick is the only real fix
- A replacement stick has to be calibrated afterwards or it drifts like a worn one
- The second stick costs far less than the first, because the controller is already open

One stick, or both while it is open
Fitted prices including the parts, the soldering and the recalibration. The second stick is the cheaper of the two by a distance, because the controller only has to be opened once.
| Option | Fitted price |
|---|---|
| One stick Left or right, whichever is drifting | C$30 |
| Both sticks The second one costs less than half the first Most popular | C$55 |
If only one stick is drifting and the other feels fine, replacing one is a perfectly reasonable choice. But the two wear at the same rate under the same hands, so the second is usually not far behind.
What the repair involves
Soldering a stick module back in squarely is the whole job. A module that goes down even slightly angled feels wrong forever, and it is the reason this is bench work rather than a swap.
-
Step 1:Measure the drift
The stick output is read and how far off centre it sits is recorded, so there is a number to compare against at the end rather than an impression that it feels better.
-
Step 2:Desolder the old module
The controller is fully stripped and the old stick desoldered. The pads are cleaned before anything new goes on, because leftover solder is how a joint ends up intermittent.
-
Step 3:Fit the new stick
A replacement module goes in square, and every joint is inspected under magnification. The stick has to sit flat as well as connect, or the shell will not close properly.
-
Step 4:Recalibrate and test
The new stick is calibrated so its resting position reads as zero on both axes, then tested across its full travel against the original readings.
What we mean by OEM, and what we do not
We fit sticks built to the original specification — the same tension, travel and fitment as the ones the controller came with. What we do not fit is the cheapest unbranded module, which varies from batch to batch and often starts drifting again within a few months. If you specifically need a Sony-manufactured part, ask before booking and we will tell you honestly what we can get.
- Same specification and feel as the originals, not a generic module
- Cheap sticks are the most common reason a "repaired" controller drifts again
- Unbranded sticks are also the most common cause of a stick that never centres properly
DualShock 4 stick questions
Can drift be fixed without soldering?
No. The stick modules are soldered to the board on a DualShock 4, and the module is the worn part, so it has to come off. There is no software fix for a worn track.
Are the new sticks genuine Sony parts?
They are built to the original specification with the same tension and travel, and they are not the cheapest unbranded modules that vary batch to batch. If you need a Sony-manufactured part specifically, ask us before booking and we will tell you what is available rather than promise something we cannot source.
Do you fit magnetic (TMR) sticks to a DualShock 4?
OEM-specification sticks are what we fit to the DualShock 4. Magnetic sticks are offered on the DualSense, the Joy-Con and the Xbox controllers, where we are confident in the parts. If you specifically want one in a DualShock 4, ask first and we will tell you what we can get.
Both sticks drift. Do you have to do both?
You do not have to, but the second stick costs less than half the first because the controller is already open and calibrated. Doing one now and one in three months costs more than doing both today.
Will the controller feel the same afterwards?
Yes. The stick has the same tension and travel as the original, and it is calibrated to the controller so the centre and the dead zone behave normally. Nothing else about the controller is touched.
Can you fix a stick that will not click?
The L3 and R3 click is part of the stick module, so a stick that has stopped clicking is replaced as part of the same job at the same price — not as a separate repair.
Bring the controller in and we will measure the drift
It takes a few minutes to read the stick output and tell you how far off centre it is, which also confirms whether it is drift or something else. There is no charge for that, and no obligation after it.
