Sticks are a different repair

This page covers everything except the thumbsticks. If your controller drifts, sticks, or will not hold centre, that is a stick replacement rather than this service — the DualSense has its own page, and so does the DualShock 4.

  • DualSense drifting — see PS5 DualSense stick drift repair
  • DualShock 4 drifting — see PS4 DualShock 4 joystick replacement
  • Anything else — triggers, bumpers, buttons, charging, connection — is this page

Controller faults, priced by generation

Fitted prices per controller. The DualSense costs more to work on because it is more tightly packed and its trigger assemblies are more involved — not because we have decided it is worth more.

Prices by option and quantity
Fault DualShock 4 (PS4) DualSense (PS5)
Trigger or bumper Sticking, not clicking, or not registering C$45 C$55
Face buttons or D-pad Soft, skipping presses, or pressing the wrong direction C$45 C$55
Charging port or battery Will not charge, will not hold, or only charges at an angle C$60 C$70
Connection or board-level fault Drops out, will not pair, or a fault the tests cannot place C$95 C$110

If only one thing has failed you pay for one thing. A sticky trigger that turns out to be a spill is cleaned rather than replaced, and if that solves it you pay the smaller amount.

What the repair involves

Controllers are the one part of a PlayStation you can repair properly without owning the console — but the DualSense in particular punishes anyone opening it without the right approach.

  • Step 1:Test every input

Each button, trigger, bumper and the D-pad are read one at a time and recorded, so the fault is a measurement rather than a guess about which part to order.

  • Step 2:Open and replace

The failed part is replaced with the correct fitment for that generation. DualShock 4 and DualSense share no internal parts, which is why the prices differ.

  • Step 3:Handle the trigger assemblies

A DualSense trigger contains springs, magnets and a ribbon connector that is easy to crease. This is the part of the job that separates a repair from a slow decline, and it is why we do not rush these.

  • Step 4:Test before it goes back

Every input is read again and compared with the original readings. A trigger that works but only reads halfway has not been fixed.

A controller that has already been opened

Attempting a repair first is understandable and we are not going to lecture you about it — but a DualSense opened with the wrong tools usually arrives with creased trigger ribbons and fractured shell clips, and those are new faults rather than the old one. Tell us if it has been opened and we will check that damage before quoting, so the price reflects everything that needs doing.

  • We report what we find before starting, including pre-existing damage
  • If a previous attempt has made it uneconomical, we will say so
  • A controller we cannot fix costs you nothing

Controller repair questions

My controller drifts. Is that this repair?

No — drift is a worn stick, and sticks are on their own pages: the DualSense drift repair for PS5 and the DualShock 4 joystick replacement for PS4. Both are cheaper than this page's board-level row and are the single most common controller repair we do.

Why does the DualSense cost more to repair than the DualShock 4?

The DualSense is more tightly packed, its triggers contain more parts, and several of its internal connectors are ribbon cables that are easy to damage. It is more bench time for the same fault, not a different standard of work.

Can you fix a controller that will not charge?

Usually. It is either the charging port or the battery, and both are priced above. Charging faults are also self-inflicted more often than people realise, because a cable pulled sideways while plugged in loads the port in a way it was never designed for.

Is a controller repair worth it, or should I replace it?

Almost always worth repairing. A replacement DualSense costs several times the dearest row on this page, and a repaired controller keeps its pairing and its history. The exception is a controller with liquid damage that has reached the board, and we will tell you if that is what we find.

My buttons are sticky rather than broken. Can that be cleaned?

Yes, and cleaning is the cheap outcome. Sticky buttons are usually a spill rather than wear, and the buttons are tested before anything is replaced. If cleaning fixes it, that is what you pay for.

How long will you have it?

About two business days. Controllers are quick once the right part is in hand; the time is mostly the reassembly and testing.

Tell us which input has stopped working

A trigger, a bumper, a face button or the charging port — naming the part gets us most of the way before you arrive. Controllers are the cheapest thing on this site to have looked at.
