Try another cable and another TV input first
A cable that has failed internally and a TV input that has been switched look exactly like a broken console port. This is two minutes of work and it is occasionally the whole answer, so it is worth doing before you bring anything in.
- Use a cable you know works on another device, not just a different cable
- Try a different HDMI input on the TV as well — inputs fail more often than people expect
- A console that outputs sound but no picture is still usually the port, so do not rule it out

Depending on console and damage
HDMI repair, priced by console
A port replacement is bench work: the console is stripped to the board, the old port desoldered and a new one fitted. The price difference between the generations is the port itself and how fine the work is.
| Option | Fitted price |
|---|---|
| HDMI port replacement — PS4 and PS4 Pro The most common console HDMI failure there is | C$130 |
| HDMI port replacement — PS5 A finer port and a denser board, so more bench time | C$160 |
| Board-level: torn pads or damaged traces The port took the board with it when it was pulled | C$190 |
The first two rows are the job you are probably booking. The third exists because a port that has been wrenched usually damages the board underneath as well, and pretending otherwise would mean quoting C$130 and charging more.
What the repair involves
An HDMI port is a mechanically weak component carrying very fine signals, which is exactly why it fails and why the work has to be done properly.
-
Step 1:Test the port and the output
We confirm the port is the fault rather than the console's video output, which is a different and more involved repair. This is the test that decides which job you are actually booking.
-
Step 2:Strip to the board
The console is fully dismantled to reach the board. There is no way to reach a console HDMI port from outside, and any shortcut here damages the shell.
-
Step 3:Replace the port
The old port is desoldered, the pads cleaned and a new port fitted. Each joint is inspected under magnification, because a single bridged pin produces exactly the fault we were trying to fix.
-
Step 4:Test at full resolution
The console is tested through the resolutions it supports, including 4K and HDR on a PS5, so a repair that only works at 1080p does not get handed back.
A wrenched port often takes the board with it
HDMI ports do not usually fail on their own — they get pulled, usually when someone trips over the cable or moves the console with it still plugged in. The force that bends the port carries on into the board underneath, and once the pads have lifted the repair becomes board-level work at the third row above. We will show you what we find before deciding anything.
- The assessment covers the board, not just the port
- If the damage is too extensive we will say so rather than taking the job
- You get one fixed price before any work starts, including when it is the dearest row
HDMI questions
Do I need a new HDMI cable as well?
No. A port replacement does not involve the cable, and if your cable works on another device it is fine. If you are not sure, bring it in and we will test it in a few seconds.
Can a bent pin be straightened instead of replacing the port?
Occasionally, if a single pin is bent and the port body is otherwise sound, and that is the cheapest outcome. In practice most failed ports have taken a knock and have worn or broken contacts, so a replacement is the honest answer. We check before quoting.
Why is the PS5 port dearer than the PS4 one?
The port itself is a finer-pitch component and the board is denser, so the work needs more bench time and more care. It also has to keep working at the resolutions the console supports, which is part of what we test afterwards.
Will it still do 4K and 120Hz after the repair?
Yes, provided the right port is fitted — a PS5 needs an HDMI 2.1 port to keep its full output, and that is the part we fit. That is also why we test through the console's supported resolutions rather than just checking that a picture appears.
The console turns on but there is no picture at all. Is that the HDMI port?
Often, yes — no output is the classic symptom. But a console with no picture can also have a fault in its video output stage, which is a different and more involved repair. The port and output tests tell the two apart before you commit to anything.
How long does it take?
About three business days. Most of it is the strip-down, the soldering and the testing at each resolution afterwards.
Tell us what the picture is doing
No picture, a flicker, or a signal that only appears when the cable is held at an angle — each points at a slightly different problem. Describe it and we can usually tell you what is likely before you bring the console in.
