Try another cable and another TV input first
A cable that has failed internally and a TV input that has been switched look exactly like a broken console port. It is two minutes of work, it is occasionally the whole answer, and it is worth doing before you bring the console anywhere.
- Use a cable you know works on another device, not simply a different cable
- Try a different input on the TV, because inputs fail more often than people expect
- A console that outputs sound but no picture is still usually the port, so do not rule it out

HDMI repair, priced by console
A port replacement is bench work: the console is stripped down to the board, the old port desoldered and a new one fitted. The difference between the generations is the port itself and how fine the work is.
| Option | Fitted price |
|---|---|
| HDMI port replacement — Xbox One, One S, One X The most common console HDMI failure there is | C$140 |
| HDMI port replacement — Series X, Series S A finer port and a denser board, so more bench time | C$160 |
| Board-level: torn pads or damaged traces The port took the board with it when it was pulled | C$190 |
The first two rows are the job you are probably booking. The third exists because ports that have been wrenched usually damage the board underneath as well, and quoting the cheap row and charging the dear one would be worse than publishing no price at all.
What the repair involves
An HDMI port is a mechanically weak part carrying very fine signals. That is why it fails, and why the work has to be done properly rather than quickly.
-
Step 1:Test the port and the output
We confirm the port is at fault rather than the console's video output, which is a different and more involved repair. This is the test that decides which job you are actually booking.
-
Step 2:Strip down to the board
There is no way to reach a console HDMI port from outside, so the console comes fully apart. Any shortcut here damages the shell, and a damaged shell is another thing to fix.
-
Step 3:Replace the port
The old port is desoldered, the pads cleaned and a new port fitted. Every joint is inspected under magnification, because one bridged pin reproduces exactly the fault we set out to fix.
-
Step 4:Test at every resolution
The console is tested through the modes it supports — 4K and HDR on a One S or One X, and 4K 120Hz and VRR on a Series X — so a repair that only works at 1080p does not get handed back.
A wrenched port usually takes the board with it
HDMI ports rarely fail on their own. They get pulled — usually by a cable someone tripped over, or by moving the console with the cable still attached. The force that bends the port carries on into the board beneath it, and once the pads have lifted the job becomes board-level work at the third row above.
- The assessment covers the board, not just the port
- If the damage is too extensive we will say so instead of taking the job
- You get one fixed price before any work starts, including when that price is the dearest row
Xbox HDMI questions
Do I need a new HDMI cable as well?
No. A port replacement does not involve the cable, and if your cable works on another device it is fine. If you are unsure, bring it in and we will test it in seconds.
Can a bent pin be straightened rather than replacing the port?
Occasionally — if one pin is bent and the port body is otherwise sound, straightening it is the cheapest outcome. In practice most failed ports have taken a knock and have worn or broken contacts, so a replacement is the honest answer. We check before quoting either way.
Why does the Series X port cost more than the One's?
It is a finer-pitch component on a denser board, so it needs more bench time and more care. It also has to keep working at the resolutions the console supports, which is a real part of what we test afterwards.
Will it still do 4K 120Hz and VRR afterwards?
Yes, as long as the correct port is fitted — a Series X needs an HDMI 2.1 port to keep its full output, and that is what we fit. It is also why the testing covers the console's supported modes rather than just checking that a picture appears.
The console turns on but there is no picture at all. Is that the HDMI port?
Often, yes — no output is the classic symptom. But a console with no picture can also have a fault in its video output stage, which is a different and more involved repair. Testing the port and the output separately tells the two apart before you commit.
How long does it take?
About three business days. Most of that is the strip-down, the soldering, and then testing at each resolution afterwards.
Tell us what the picture is doing
No picture, a flicker, or a signal that only appears when the cable is held at an angle each point at a slightly different problem. Describe it and we can usually tell you what is likely before you bring the console in.
